If you think you have an abscessed tooth or dental infection, please call us immediately and let us know that it’s a dental emergency. A tooth infection is nothing to mess with – it can lead to problems with your overall health.
In most cases, there’s a good chance that the problem with the tooth started long before any symptoms or pain showed up.
Signs of an abscessed tooth or infection include the following:
- toothache or pain (dull or acute)
- sensitivity to cold and hot
- strange taste in your mouth (which could be pus)
- pain when chewing or biting
- cracked, or broken tooth or filling
- open sore
- swelling of the gums
- redness in the gums
- swelling of the cheek
- swelling of the jaw
In most cases, we’ll need the infection to clear up before we can treat your teeth and gums. We’ll prescribe an antibiotic, which will help get your dental health back on track. Then, we’ll address the underlying problem. Depending on what’s causing the abscessed tooth or infection, we might need to fill a cavity, extract the tooth (which is often the case with wisdom teeth), and/or perform a root canal.
To make your dental visit more comfortable, we offer three types of sedation for the procedure: laughing gas, oral sedation, and IV sedation.
