Believe it or not, historians trace the use of laughing gas in dental offices back to the late 1700s.
But the more widespread use of laughing gas in dentistry is largely attributed to Horace Wells, a Connecticut dentist who began experimenting with its use in the mid-1800s. By 1864, the American Dental Association had credited Dr. Wells with his “discovery” of the anesthesia.
But it wasn’t until the 1950s and 1960s that dental schools in the United States started teaching how to use laughing gas (nitrous oxide) for dentistry.
In today’s dentistry, the use of laughing gas is relatively commonplace, but not all dental offices in the Phoenix area offer laughing gas. We do, and in addition to laughing gas, we also offer oral sedation and IV sedation.
Laughing gas is the most mild form of sedation – we can even use laughing gas for cleanings. We can also use laughing gas for children who are afraid of the dentist and/or have a physical disability that makes it hard to receive dental treatment.
Laughing gas is a safe, effective form of sedation that’s administered through a nosepiece. During your visit, we can monitor the level of laughing gas, ensuring that you’re always comfortable. The gas itself has a faint taste and odor that’s sweet, and we often use nitrous oxide in conjunction with Novocain (a numbing agent).
