Laughing gas is the layman’s term for nitrous oxide, which has been used in dental offices since the late 1700s.
What is laughing gas? It’s a colorless gas that’s administered through a nosepiece, and it’s the most mild form of sedation for dentistry. Most people love laughing gas, because it helps them relax, maybe even makes them giggle, thus the name.
When laughing gas is delivered through the nosepiece, it has a faint odor and taste, which is sweet. You don’t have to do anything – just breathe in through your nose. Generally, within a few minutes, you’ll start to feel the effects of the laughing gas, calming you and making you feel a bit giddy.
We can use laughing gas for cleanings, exams, fillings, and other dental procedures and treatments. Sometimes laughing gas is used on its own, but in most cases, we administer it in conjunction with Novocain, which is a numbing agent.
During your entire dental appointment, we can monitor the level of laughing gas that we’re administering and adjust it up or down, to the perfect comfort level. Once your dental treatment is completed, we switch over to oxygen, to bring you back to full alertness.
In the majority of cases, you can drive yourself home after receiving laughing gas, but if you don’t feel 100% alert, you can always rest in our front office area and/or ask someone to come and pick you up.
In addition to laughing gas, our dental offices offer oral sedation (known as conscious sedation) and IV sedation (known as general anesthesia).
